Reading Bowl

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Are you in 4th or 5th grade?
Are you a voracious Reader?
Do you excel at games like Jeopardy?
Do you love competition?

.....then Reading Bowl is for you!

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at KES.  The competition was created by Helen Ruffin, a media specialist in Dekalb County.  She served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children’s Book Award nominee program. This literature program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education. This literature program inspired her to use the nominee books to encourage her students to read.

The "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz bowl-like format.  There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.

The team is sponsored by Ms. Bearden and Ms. Wright (4th grade teacher).  Official HRRB rules state that only 10 students can be on the team.  We select the 'top ten' readers out of those interested based on the following criteria:
  • Amount of books read
  • 10 Questions/Answers turned in for each book read so we can quiz each other
  • Attendance
We meet once a month during recess in the Media Center. The month before competition, we will meet once a week in the Media Center.
